Note: The Golden Horseshoe was an expression used to describe the urban area around the west end of Lake Ontario.  The built up area stretches westerly from Oshawa along the north shore of Lake Ontario to Hamilton at the western tip, then it continues south-easterly through to the Niagara Peninsula. The shape of this area is horse shoe shaped when viewed on a map - thus the name.
