The West Montrose, Ontario covered bridge is in Waterloo

County on Woolwich Township Road 50, just south of

Regional Road 86 and is nicknamed the "Kissing Bridge" .

This 1959 Department of Highways photograph was the basis

for the illustration on the cover of the map.  Although the

bridge was shortened on the map cover - it is well

represented.

On Sunday, August 28, 1960 a provincial historical plaque

was unveiled commemorating this bridge - the last covered

bridge in Ontario.  (Ontario Archives)

The 401 is now completed or under construction from Port Hope in the east to Highway 25

in the west in the Toronto portion.

Warning signs are now orange and black rather than yellow and black as in previous maps.

Highway 103 is under construction between Highways 12 and 69.

In an ongoing effort to promote safety on the roads - the Department of Highways

inserted safety slogans for many years on their maps.  This is the collection from the

 1958 map.
